Tap'N With West Coast Rapper Young Sixx
Today we are Tap’N in with west coast rapper Young Sixx, who actually got his start in music overseas.
Young Sixx, thank you for talking with us today. You have a pretty unique background, let’s start with you telling us about your story and how you got where you are today.
Young Sixx: I started my music career in Germany, and then came to America 2017 to get my bachelor’s degree in business. After I got my degree I picked up the mic again and I’ve been pursuing my dream in music full time ever since.
Germany, wow! That’s dope and definitely not what I was expecting to hear lol. What has been your biggest obstacle in your journey as an artist?
Young Sixx: My biggest obstacle has been not being the cliche rapper; not having the “typical sound of a west coast rapper,” but I’m based in the west coast. I have my own sound and I don’t fall for the peer pressure to fit in just for the hype. I believe staying true to myself will get me where I’m needed to be in music.
I feel you, and it’s so important to stay true to who you are as an artist. Are there any lessons that you’ve learned during that process?
Young Sixx: Just business, never personal, there is a lot of smoke and mirrors.
Yup, if you can master keeping your emotions out of business you’ll go far. Tell us about your music, how would you describe your sound?
Young Sixx: My sound is evolving. It’s “today,” fresh and classic, new but familiar, even relatable, but I still have my original sound of my own.
Are there any other artists you would compare yourself to?
Young Sixx: None, sonically. But if I have to choose I would compare myself to say business savvy jay z, and hustler like Nipsey.
Those are some rap rap legends, especially in business. I bet you have some pretty big visions for yourself. What are your plans for the future?
Young Sixx: Staying constant and going hard till I reach a successful level in my career then go harder!
Consistency is key!. What motivates you, or keeps you going?
Young Sixx: Being able to entertain and perform for the masses. And always trying to create more.
If you could work with any artists, who would you choose?
Young Sixx: I’d choose any upcoming producer that can help establish my sound.
That’s really smart. I think it’s always good for an artist to work with one or two producers they can really build and create their own sound with. What would you say sets you apart from other artists?
Young Sixx: What sets me apart is that I understand it like business, and I approach it like a business.
OK, I can see why you compared yourself to the business mindset of Jay-Z and Nipsey then. What should we know about your work and how do you define success?
Young Sixx: My work is high quality and consistent, and always from an authentic place. How I define success is still in motion. I haven’t reached the level I deserve yet, but I’m still going.
Do you have any new projects or music coming out you can tell us about?
Young Sixx: Yes, I just released a single with Teeflii with that classic west coast sound, and I plan on dropping two or more releases by the end of the year.
We will definitely be looking out for that! Tell us something that might surprise people to know about you.
Young Sixx: I speak German fluently
Dope! That’s not an easy language to speak either. Is there anything else you want people to know about you?
Young Sixx: Yes, I’m all about building and networking, and anything that’s pushing progression for hip hop culture and us as a people.
Ok, Young Sixx. It was a pleasure talking with you and learning more about you. I’m looking forward to watching your journey. Tell everyone how and where they can find you.
