Romell Kidd on "Was The Best," His Journey from Moreno Valley, and Faith-Driven Motivation

Emerging from Moreno Valley, CA, Romell Kidd brings a fresh and authentic voice to the music scene, reflecting his Inland Empire roots and personal experiences. Recently winning The Liq Podcast Open Mic, Romell is connecting deeply with fans through his latest single, “Was The Best.” In this interview, he shares his journey, creative process, and advice for staying grounded in the music industry.

From the Inland Empire to the Stage

Romell’s journey in music is closely tied to his life in the Inland Empire. “The I.E. has always been my home and a big part of my story,” he explains. “It’s the land of really no opportunity and a lot of crab-in-a-bucket mentality, but I’ve had every major life event happen here. I just put all that I’ve experienced into my music to show people there’s hope, even with limited opportunity.”

Growing up, he was inspired by artists like R. Kelly, T-Pain, Chris Brown, Tory Lanez, and TeeFlii. Their smooth, versatile styles influenced his sound and knack for catchy hooks. “I like to switch up my melodies and flows a lot so that listeners don’t get bored,” Romell shares. “My sound is one of a kind—very unique and very distinctive.”

"Was The Best": A Relatable Story of Heartbreak and Growth

Romell’s latest single, “Was The Best,” is a powerful song about heartbreak and resilience. “It’s a song about a man going through a breakup and trying to keep his girl from leaving during his darkest times,” he explains. “He realizes she wants someone with fewer issues and just wants to have fun, so he decides to focus on himself and succeed despite it all.” The song resonates with listeners who’ve experienced similar challenges, capturing the strength it takes to move forward.

The Creative Process: Faith and Emotion

Romell’s writing process is rooted in his emotions. “I go off the emotion I feel first, and then I find a beat that fits,” he says. Before recording, Romell grounds himself through prayer. “I usually pray and ask God to help me deliver the song properly and bring good energy into the studio.”

Romell’s faith in God has been central to his journey, especially during challenging times. “I got so depressed and frustrated because music wasn’t going how I wanted it to,” he admits. “I overcame that by praying and fasting, just letting God do His job. Jesus made it happen for me.”

Live Performances and Fan Connection

Live performances hold a special place in Romell’s heart. “One of my most memorable experiences was my first performance—I thought I wouldn’t sound good, but the crowd loved it, and it pushed me to pursue music even more,” he shares. Engaging with fans is equally important to him. “I love to interact with my fans, from DMs to phone calls to real-life meetups. They play the biggest role in keeping my music alive and relevant.”

Future Goals: From Moreno Valley to the World

With his sights set high, Romell is ready to expand his reach. “My goal for next year is to drop more projects and visuals, work with more artists, and get on big shows like Rolling Loud to get my name out there,” he says. In five years, he envisions himself making a major impact for the Inland Empire, both as an artist and a role model. “I want to be on tours with sponsorships, a big name in the industry with awards—the whole nine. And personally, I see myself living for God with a comfortable, blessed life.”

Staying Motivated and Authentic

Romell balances his music career with his personal life, carving out time for mental health, family, and faith. “I make time every day to separate the two lifestyles—music and personal,” he explains. This commitment to balance keeps him inspired. “I take bits and pieces from my life story and turn them into lyrics along the way.”

Advice for Aspiring Artists

For those looking to make it in the industry, Romell’s advice is simple: “Always dream big, no matter how small your city. Believe in God, believe in your purpose, and stay focused no matter what people say. Be 100 percent authentically you.”
