In this exclusive interview, she opens up about her journey, influences, and what’s next as she prepares to drop her upcoming project.
The Inspiration Behind "S.T.A.R."
For Cuhdeejah, "S.T.A.R." is more than just a fun track—it's a reflection of where she’s at in life. “Honestly, I was just having a good time. I’ve been going through a lot in my personal life, and ‘S.T.A.R.’ helped me express that,” she says. The track represents the type of energy and people she's drawn to. “Lots of people ask me what my dating life is like or what I’m attracted to, and a star is my response. I’m definitely interested in a person with star qualities.”
Winning The Liq Podcast Open Mic: A Turning Point
Cuhdeejah’s win at The Liq Podcast Open Mic was a major milestone in her career. “Winning the Open Mic Night was actually very competitive. It was an eye-opener for me to take my craft a little more seriously,” she says. The experience taught her the importance of reading the room and understanding her audience. “Not all the time what the fans want to hear from you are the songs you enjoy most from yourself,” she admits, showing her commitment to both artistry and connecting with her listeners.
L.A. Influence and Style
While Cuhdeejah hails from Hawthorne, California, her music is deeply influenced by the Los Angeles scene. “I grew up on Crenshaw & 135th, and my music is heavily influenced by that,” she explains. From the producers to her verses, her sound reflects the unmistakable energy of L.A. “Everything about my most recent music catalog gives L.A.”
Challenges in the Industry as a Female Rapper
Breaking into the music industry was far from easy for Cuhdeejah, who faced criticism from the start. “People criticized me for my age, the fact that I’m a mom, and just because I’m a female,” she shares. However, she’s remained resilient, gaining the thick skin necessary to thrive. “One thing I had to gain is tough skin because this is something I became passionate about. I move at my pace, and I promote to everyone, but I engage with the people that love and support me.”
Musical and Personal Influences
Cuhdeejah credits her musical mentor Joe Moses for playing a key role in her journey. “Joe Moses literally held my hand, took me to the studio, and introduced me to people. He kept me focused, and I’m forever grateful to have had him be a part of my music journey,” she says. On a personal level, her father has been her biggest supporter from day one. “My dad has been encouraging me and investing in me since I first said I wanted to rap.”
What’s Next for Cuhdeejah?
With “S.T.A.R.” gaining momentum, Cuhdeejah is gearing up for her next big release. “I’m finally about to drop a project. It’s going to emit a lot of feminine positivity, hustle, and overall fun. I’m in a happy space.” Fans can expect an exciting new chapter filled with powerful tracks and collaborations.
Staying Authentic
In an industry that often pressures artists to conform, Cuhdeejah stays true to herself by exploring new experiences. “I travel. A lot of stress comes from staying within your everyday scenery. I love seeing different things—it gives me topics,” she says, highlighting the importance of inspiration beyond music.
Empowering Other Women
When asked what advice she has for young women entering the rap game, Cuhdeejah keeps it real: “The game comes with a lot. There will be quite a few no’s before yes’s. But no matter what, you have to give it a million percent. It has to become a lifestyle.” Her message is one of resilience and focus—“Block everything else out and just live.”
Future Goals
In the next few years, Cuhdeejah has her sights set high. “I wanna be amongst some of the biggest in my city if not globally. I just want to connect with lots of artists and see where music will take me.” For her, music is more than just rap—it's the foundation of a larger brand and business. “I just want to excel and have my city support me.”
