JUN Heats Up the Scene with "Caution" – A Bold New Sound for California's Female Rap Scene

Los Angeles-based rapper JUN is making waves in the California rap scene with her new single, Caution, a standout track from her EP Starlight. Having just won Liq Podcast's Open Mic Night, JUN is showing that her talent is no fluke. She brings a fresh and authentic voice to a saturated industry, crafting a sound that reflects her life experiences, self-confidence, and resilience. We sat down with JUN to talk about her journey, the making of Caution, and what’s next for this rising star.

The Inspiration Behind "Caution"

When asked about the inspiration for Caution, JUN explained that it draws from the overarching theme of her EP Starlight, but the song holds a special place for her. "It’s a moment of awakening," she shares. "I’m realizing I’m back in full form, realizing my worth again." JUN’s lyrics dive into her newfound self-confidence, acknowledging that she’s been through it all and won’t settle for anything less than what she deserves. "If what you’re feeling is real, come chill with me; if not, I’m keeping it pushing," she adds, summing up the core message of the track.

Message and Creative Process

Starlight as a whole is a personal project for JUN, and Caution is its shining centerpiece. "My message with this track is simple: listen to yourself and find out what’s for you. Your body will tell you if it’s right," JUN explains. The process of creating the song was equally personal. "I wanted to create a vibe that uplifted the tempo for the project but still kept that fly feeling," she says, recounting how she worked closely with her producer, Austin Fowler. The two developed a chemistry that shines through in the final product.

Fowler played a key role in shaping the sound of Caution. "Austin is an amazing producer; you’ll be hearing big things about him soon," JUN remarks, emphasizing their deep connection. The track, recorded at JUN's home studio, holds a special intimacy for her. "It was the only track we recorded at the crib, and it turned out to be my favorite. It allowed me to really express myself."

The Liq Podcast Open Mic Night Experience

Winning Liq Podcast’s Open Mic Night was a pivotal moment for JUN, but it wasn’t about validation for her. "Honestly, I never need confirmation, but it gave me exactly what I knew it would. Keep doing what I’m doing," she says confidently. JUN’s performance stood out in a crowded field, signaling that she is a force to be reckoned with in the rap game.

Challenges in the Making of "Caution"

Despite her confidence, creating Caution wasn’t without its challenges. One of the toughest parts of the process was dealing with technical limitations. "We had to record with the music so low I could barely hear the playback," JUN shares. However, hearing the final mix in a professional studio confirmed what she already knew: "Caution was fire."

JUN’s Unique Sound in the California Rap Scene

JUN’s music stands out in a landscape that’s increasingly crowded. While she draws on her California roots, particularly the beats, her sound transcends regional borders. "I think I’m what the L.A. female rap scene is missing," JUN says. "Not just in sound, but in personality, style, and purpose. I’m talking about my journey in a way that’s unique—not your average topics."

Her background in California is integral to her sound. Growing up in Inglewood with a family steeped in music—her grandfather was the first African American DJ at KJLH—JUN has been surrounded by music her whole life. "Music was a way of life in my household," she says, recalling the record players, DVDs, CDs, and cassette tapes that filled her home.

JUN’s Role in Empowering Women in Rap

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, JUN is committed to staying authentic. "I’m here to impact women and men in a way that lets them know authenticity always wins," she says. JUN believes in staying true to herself, no matter the challenges, and her music reflects this ethos. "You don’t have to sell yourself to do what you love. Hard work pays off with consistency."

She also emphasizes unity and family, values that come through in both her personal life and her career. "You’ll always need a team, so treat others the way you want to be treated. It sounds cliché, but it’s true."

Fan Engagement and the Impact of "Caution"

JUN’s connection with her fans is one of her greatest strengths. "I pull up and show love where it makes sense," she says. She describes herself as someone who moves with intention, always bringing good energy wherever she goes. This approach has earned her a loyal fanbase that loves Caution. "This single has been the #1 fan favorite from my EP," she shares, with fans posting videos of themselves doing everything from dancing to working out to the song.

Advice for Aspiring Female Rappers

When it comes to advice for other women looking to make their mark in rap, JUN stresses the importance of authenticity. "Find your own sound and talk about things with substance," she advises. She’s acutely aware of the responsibility artists have to the next generation. "Young girls are watching. If you’re hard, it’s still going to translate in a swaggy way regardless."

She also emphasizes the importance of understanding the business side of music. "Learn every position. If you plan on taking music seriously, you’ve got to have a plan with direction and intent."

What’s Next for JUN?

With the release of Caution and the success of Starlight, JUN has big plans for the future. "You’re going to hear a few features that people have been asking about," she teases. She’s also focusing on being more open to collaborations that make sense for her. For now, JUN is riding the wave of her recent success, encouraging fans to check out her EP Starlight and its single New Climate.

As JUN continues to make her mark on the rap scene, one thing is clear: her star is only just beginning to rise.
